1. Coverage

Coverage varies greatly from company to company. The same company can even offer multiple policy types. Travel insurance can provide coverage for a variety of situations. Specifically, it can cover the following:

  • Cancellation & Amendment fees
  • Emergency Medical and/or Dental -International only
  • Lost Baggage
  • Delayed Luggage
  • 24/7 Emergency assistance
  • Travel service provider insolvency
  • Travel Delay
  • Business Travel
  • Personal liability

  • Car Rental excess

2. Policies

Most policies will be sold, covering a combination of any or all of the above. Like car and house insurance, travel insurance companies work out the cost of their policies based on an assessment of risk. This means they consider the cost of claims along with a healthy profit margin for taking that risk. More coverage means more financial risk which increases the cost to the consumer.

If you need to save money, a budget policy should cover the basics like cancellation and emergency medical/dental. However, it is essential to carefully review the coverage limits for cancellation and medical expenses. Additionally, ensure that the coverage aligns with the amount you have spent on the trip and the potential cost of medical services at your destination.

If you can afford it, a comprehensive policy will cost more but it will cover things you didn’t even know you needed until you need it.  For example, if you were to be hospitalized for an extended time, a basic policy is not likely to cover the cost of a loved one to travel to be with you.

If you are cruising overnight, check to make sure your policy covers cruising. Many require payment of an extra fee.

5. Renting Car

If the delay exceeds 6 hours, the travel insurance policy will provide coverage for a wide range of expenses. This includes provisions for food and accommodation near the airport if required, while you wait.

7. Customer service

Check what customer service options are available when

a) You are in an emergency

b) You need to make a claim.

If the customer service provided is email on, run a mile. They need to provide a number that can be called 24/7.

If you have managed to secure travel insurance, that’s great. However, it is important to also read reviews to gauge how helpful their service has been in actual emergency situations or when filing a claim.
