What we really liked

  • Opportunity to experience a very remote bucket list destination
  • “Glamping” in the remote Kimberley area at the APT Wilderness lodge only 10 mins from the Bungle Bungles
  • Incredible meals served throughout the trip using local produce
  • Extensive knowledge of the APT driver/guide of the area and indigenous culture
  • Sitting around the campsite fire of a night
  • Comfort of the 4WD coach
  • 30-min. helicopter ride over the magnificent Bungle Bungle Ranges-highly recommended

What we didn't like so much

  • Glamping is as luxury as is possible in such a remote area, just don’t expect high end luxury it’s just not possible in such a remote area.
  • 5 minutes for hot water to come through in the mornings.
  • The accommodation at the Kununurra Country Club isn’t luxury just the best of what’s available in the area
  • The 2-hour corrugated dirt road in and out of from the lodge/National Park. One way is enough, take the option to fly in one -way.
  • Early morning starts, plan a few days rest afterwards.

Summary

Best suited to those who want to experience this extremely remote area of Australia without the hassle of towing their own caravan. I cannot stress just how remote this area is, it honestly does not get any more remote. The price of the tour is reflective of the luxurious APT brand and for this you’ll receive an authentic Australian outback, once in a lifetime bucket list trip made as comfortable as possible by APT and their staff. I strongly recommend the option to fly either in, out or both as the road is long and very rough in places. Once you’ve seen it on the way in you’ve seen it.

APT Kimberley Wilderness

Our experience:

Prior to this trip, I had no real concept of the remoteness of the Kimberley region in Western Australia. The Bungle Bungles are 850km from Broome and 1135km from Darwin. Ours was a 4-night/5-day experience from Kununurra. However, it was still a 350km 5.5 hour trip by road of which 2.5 hours is dirt road and very rough in places. Outback Australia honestly does not get any more remote than this.

Range Of Hiking Abilities

The APT itinerary offers a combination of hiking, cultural and culinary experiences in the unique setting that is the Kimberley. This does mean early morning starts and the ability to walk for a few hours on some of the hikes. Good walking shoes and hiking poles are recommended. APT provides 2 guides on the hikes to allow for a range of hiking abilities.

Bungle Bungle

If the hikes are too strenuous there is the option to fly over what’s referred to as the Bungle Bungle massive by helicopter instead. We did this as well and it is an experience I highly recommend to everyone.

Flying over is the only way one can truly appreciate the scale of one of the most magnificent natural attractions you will ever see. This trip is quite active and requires a moderate level of fitness. The oldest ever participant recorded was 92 so it can be done at any age but is one that should be ticked off your bucket list sooner rather than later for the greatest level of ease and enjoyment.

Kununurra

If the rough roads and hiking seem too strenuous there are other ways to visit the area so don’t be deterred. The road into the Bungle Bungles is the same road on the way back to Kununurra. Once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it. I, therefore, recommend flying out instead of driving both ways as we did.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer to avoid the long drive and rough road altogether you can fly in and out with the option to stay overnight. Need help to decide if this APT tour or another alternative is the best way for you to make your bucket list visit Kimberley a reality?
